Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island schools have designed and implemented a public-private partnership approach to public education. Parents, teachers, school administrators and students work together to elevate and enhance the learning process. In addition to each school's respective parent-teacher organization, every school sponsors an individual School Improvement Council. Together, with the Island School Council (which helps to support the arts in the public schools), these parent-driven organizations raise money for Hilton Head education and community awareness.

Hilton Head has played an important role in American history, from the American Revolution through the Civil War and the Reconstruction. Evidence of early Hilton Head Island history dates back to 1450 B.C. with the Indian Shell Ring in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site proves that the oyster has been a staple in Lowcountry cuisine for a very long time. In 1663, Sir William Hilton lent his name to the island while searching for the entrance to Port Royal. His positive report of the ideal farming conditions promoted British colonization.
